RE: NIH Stimulus Related improvement programs (C06 and G20)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is inviting grant applications to support renovating, repairing, or improving core and extramural facilities:

Extramural Research Facilities Improvement Program (C06)
This program supports efforts to make major alterations and renovations to existing buildings, add to existing buildings, complete uninhabitable shell space in existing buildings, or construct new facilities including research and animal facilities. The major objective is to facilitate and enhance the conduct of Public Health Service (PHS)-supported biomedical and behavioral research by supporting the costs of improving basic research, clinical research, and animal facilities to meet the biomedical or behavioral research, research training, or research support needs of an institution. Budgets for direct costs between $2M and $15M may be requested.

Core Facility Renovation, Repair, and Improvement (G20)
This program supports efforts to renovate or repair core facilities. This program is to upgrade core facilities to support the conduct of PHS supported biomedical and/or behavioral research. Support can be requested to alter and renovate (A&R) the core facility as well as to improve the general equipment in the core facility or to purchase general equipment. Equipment over $100,000 in cost cannot be requested. Budgets for direct costs between $1M and $10M may be requested.

There is a campus limit of three proposals for the C06 and a limit of two proposals for the G20.

Since the two RFA’s are similar and there is a potential for overlap or misclassification, the campus has decided to combine the two for the internal competition.

Each proposal may have only one Primary Investigator, who must be responsible for allocation of space for biomedical and behavioral research and research training, such as a Dean, Provost, Department Head, or Center/Institute Director.

I am requesting that preliminary nominations for both the C06 and G20, containing the following information, be sent to my office (via electronic submission to or@research.uci.edu) by March 31, 2009:

A broad ad hoc committee will convene to review the preliminary proposals. The selected PIs will be notified in time to submit for the competition in which they applied and will be asked to work with Capital Planning and UCI Design and Construction on the proposal.

For more information about the C06 please visit http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-09-008.html, for the G20 visit http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-09-007.html. Questions about our internal campus review process may be directed to Marie Richman at richman@uci.edu or x4-2898.
