Research Administration Management Program (RAMP)
The highly regarded Research Administration Management Program, known on campus and at the medical center as RAMP, has enjoyed a very successful 5-year run. The 15-course program offered multiple times per year at both locations has been classroom based and as such has required a rigorous commitment from the management staff in the Office of Research Administration. Our goal has always been to offer a comprehensive, certificated training program that provides campus participants with an improved understanding of regulations, policies, and procedures; strengthens internal controls; and provides access to important resources and contacts when help is needed.
As we look to the future of our growing University, we see an increased demand for this type of training. We believe that by leveraging many of the new technologies, we will be able to make elements of this program available more often to more people. However, converting our program with current resources will require that we place our existing program on hold. We look forward to introducing a new, improved version of the program that will continue to support the research activities of the University.
The courses currently posted on our website will be offered as planned. While we retool and reinvent RAMP, the staff members in the Office of Research Administration are, as always, available to help and support faculty, staff and students as needed.
Although I am saddened by what appears to be an end of an era, I am excited about the possibilities that lay ahead. I congratulate all of our RAMP graduates and thank the faculty and staff who have supported this program.
We have a lot of work to do and I am anxious for the day that we can present you with a new program that will not only meet but exceed the level of excellence that has been the hallmark of RAMP.

Electronic Research Tutorials
We offer three self-paced on-line UCI Research Tutorials for individuals performing research. The tutorials review core concepts for the responsible conduct of research involving human research participants, animals and guide users through the major principles for conducting research in a way that is consistent with federal and University requirements and with accepted scientific standards. Researchers (i.e., Lead Researcher, Co-Investigators, Research Personnel) listed on human or animal protocols must complete the applicable tutorials for credit before Committee approval can be granted.
The following research tutorials are available:
- Animal Care & Use Tutorial (required for IACUC protocols)
- HIPAA Research Tutorial (required for IRB protocols involving PHI)
- Human Research Tutorial (required for IRB Protocols)
Electronic Research Tutorial Instructions
If you are taking the tutorial as a requirement for a UCI protocol, you must take the tutorial for credit. In order to receive credit for taking a tutorial, UCI employees and students must take the tutorials using their UCINetID (UCI Network ID) and password. All of the tutorials can be taken anonymously to practice or review core concepts.
IRB Protocols: Non-UCI affiliated study team members working on UCI IRB protocols may take the UCI Human Research Tutorial or submit verification of human subject research training from their own institution. Note: guest UCINetIDs are no longer required to take UCI Human Research Tutorial.
IACUC Protocols: Non-UCI affiliated study team members must take the UCI Animal Care and Use Tutorial to work with live animals at UCI. Note: guest UCINetIDs are no longer required to take the UCI Animal Care and Use Tutorial.
If an outside institution has asked you to complete a UCI tutorial, you should take the tutorial as a visitor. Upon completion of the tutorial, a congratulations message will appear indicating that you have completed the tutorial as a visitor. You should print this for verification of tutorial completion if it is required by your institution.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are taking the tutorial for a UCI protocol, you must take the tutorial for credit.
Troubleshooting
- UCInetIDs must be activated by the employee before they may be used. If you have never activated your account and don't have a password, click on the link above and follow the on-screen instructions. You will need to have your Employee ID number, Social Security Number and Birth Date for activation.
- If you are in the School of Medicine and are having trouble identifying your password, call the School of Medicine computer help desk at (949) 824-3434.
- Network and Academic Computing Services (NACS) is the campus department that manages UCInetIDs for UCI employees and students.
- Contact NACS for:
- Questions or problems with your UCInetID
- Forgotten passwords—see website above or call the NACS helpdesk at (949) 824-2222.
- Experiencing problems with a research tutorial? Contact the Office of Research Administration at (949) 824-6068, 2125 or 6662.
Tutorial Verification Database
Anyone can verify whether a person performing research has taken any of the electronic research tutorials for credit. To verify the completion of a tutorial for credit, go to http://www.rgs.uci.edu/check/ and enter a first name, last name or both. The resulting page can be provided to the Office of Research Administration to verify tutorial completion.
